I became a nurse assistant in 1992. The reasons why I choose that line of work. I love working with people, and there was plenty of employment in that field of work. Also! I had three children, getting ready to go off to collage. I worked seven a.m. to three p.m. shifts, Monday to Friday, as a diesel mechanic. Saturday and Sunday I work as nurse assistant. The money was good. Also, some nursing home was offering up to $900 signs on bonus. There was a surprise waiting for me. I soon found out that being a black male nurse assistant was bad choice of work.
Every female on duty will be coming to the male nurse assistants asking them to lift heavy patients. At the same time the male nurse assistants are required to carry out their work load. The black male nurse assistants are looks down upon by even the black female nurse assistants. In fact, I heard them say "It is not a job for men" The black male nurse assistant is a prime target for every suspected rape, in that nursing home.
He is in a set up position for every accusation, such as sexual harassment. If he falls from grace with the female workers on his shift, they set him up, for a down fall. On one of my last job, the female workers were pouring water on my patients, to make it looks like the patient was left all night wet. When the girls were caught, the unit manager was a part of the plot. So! I walked off the job. Once you fall from grace among women, no body among them is going to speak the truth in your defense. The one that spoke up in your defense will be given the silent treatment, worst than what you the man got. What is the point I am trying to make here? If you plan to go into the medical field, start from LPN or RN. If you go study to be a nurse assistant, you are putting yourself in line of fire.
Another problem: Some women patients do not want male nurse assistants taking care of them. Their family does not want men, especially black males taking care of their wives, daughters, and mothers. Watch this! Black men do not want black male nurse assistant working with their wives. What am I trying to convey here? As a black man, your emotional health is compromise when you take up that line of work, go learn a new line of work.
